Addressing Dental Advertising in Alberta
Some Alberta dentists are challenging their professions Code of Ethics, which they complain prevents them from posting information crucial for patients. The Alberta Dental Association and College argues the Code protects the public from misleading promotions.
Are dental advertising rules helping or hindering Albertans? Are they fair to dentists? Is Alberta’s dental code of ad ethics archaic?

Dr. Murray Knebel Article Featured in May/June 2009 IMPACT Magazine Article
I had just finished having my teeth cleaned when I ran into Dr. Murray Knebel in the lobby of his dental studio - Sierra Centre for Dental Wellness in southwest Calgary.
After a friendly chat, I mentioned to Knebel that I had a friend who got a crown recently and was very unhappy. After visiting her dentist on three separate occasions, she went through untold pain and ended up with a substandard crown with a metal base, which looked ugly and left her tooth very sensitive.

Dear Dr. Knebel, Desirae & the Sierra Dental Clinic Staff
Thank you so much for bringing the Sierra Dental Clinic to our inaugural JWHL weekend. It was fantastic to have your business add excitement to our East/West weekend. We are truly grateful that you believed in our event, as it did take a visionary to see the potential of what we were trying to achieve. The Edge School has really been inspired by the fall market atmosphere we all created and would like to incorporate this idea into future tournaments. We've sent out follow-up emails to our Edge community letting them know where they can contact you to pick up their mouth guards and, or for any dental services they may be interested in.
The mouth guard offer was an extraordinary idea and not only helped our girls fundraising efforts, but will now carry forward and protect their beautiful smiles. We would also like to thank you for bidding on and winning the Kelly Hrudy question and answer session, which truly went far beyond our hopes and expectations.
Best wishes on your company' success and we look forward to working with you in the future. Thank you again for believing in and supporting our team.
Sincerely,
Franci

Hello Sierra,
My husband and I are back from Africa and I wanted to thank you once again for the very generous donation from Sierra Dental. The toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss were very well received and I know each and every item donated will be put to good use by all that received them!
We split the donation between two children's homes. One was the Tumaini Children's Home, which is located near Mt. Kenya in Kenya. They have 53 children there at the moment, all over the age of seven and all suffering from aids. With free medication, good food and donations such as yours the home has not lost a child now for over 2.5 years. The children were healthy looking, excited to have visitors and very keen on new toothbrushes!! We showed them how to use the floss - I think this was new to them, but the nurse and the Director of the home will help them with this going forward.
The second donation went to an organization called Lohada, which is located in Arusha, Tanzania. It is run by a lady whose name is Happiness! One little girl we visited with was not shy about making it known she wanted up in my arms. As soon as I picked her up she pulled the glasses off my face and put them on her face. Her expression of puzzlement when she couldn't see clearly out of them (my glasses have a heavy prescription) was quite comical. Again, the children are very well looked after with every penny being stretched as far as possible. Every donation is a blessing to Happiness and joy and she sends her thanks.
Thank you again for the wonderful donation!!

Battalion School Carnival 2010
This year the Battalion School Carnival was held on June 11, 2010. While the weather was damp, it did not dampen our spirits for raising funds for this worthwhile organization.
To increase the fun a Photobooth was set up with the help of our friends at drgphotography.ca and everyone was invited to stop by the booth and have their picture taken.
As you can see in the Gallery Slideshow below some great pictures were taken. Again our thanks to everyone who stopped by! See you next year!

Battalion School Carnival 2009
Over the last few years we have excitedly been involved in the Battalion School Carnival. A whopping 1000 neighborhood kids and their parents gathered together to enjoy an evening of fun! Games, contests, DJ and dancing filled Signal Hill with laughter on June 4th 2009. Local children were having a blast "Dunking their Dentist” and getting dunked themselves!
Upon arrival each child received a Sierra balloon and loot bag filled with toys, stickers and of course oral care tools such as cartooned toothbrushes, paste and floss. If “Dunk the Dentist” wasn’t your cup of tea, there were air filled Bouncers, Obstacle Course, Money Tunnel, Loony Walk, Wandering Clowns and many other Carnival Games. A great basket filled with his and hers electric toothbrushes as well as an 8GB i-Pod TOUCH and other oral care items was donated to the hugely successful silent auction. Thanks to all of the generous participants and volunteers who helped raise $12,000 for Battalion School! This was the best year yet!

University Scholarships
When Dr. Murray Knebel was a struggling Dental Student, he experienced the generosity of others and has sworn to give back that generosity to other young deserving, motivated students.
Each year he generously donates a Scholarship to a local High School Student with the Dr. Knebel Scholarship.
Here is a letter he recently received from a scholarship winner who now attends Queen's University.
November 16, 2008
 Dear Dr. Murray Knebel,
I am writing to express my gratitude for your sponsorship, as I was the recipient of the Dr. Knebel Scholarship this past graduation year at Bishop Carroll High School. My fIrst year of applied science at Queen's university is now in full force. My classes, community projects and homework are all very time consuming. Financial assistance from this scholarship means more time to focus on my studies, as I am not required to take a part time job. Not only has your scholarship helped finance my education, it has also been a reward for my hard work in high school, therefore encouraging myself to continue to strive for academic excellence in the future. Thanks, again for your generosity.
Sincerely,
Kristyn

Earlier this evening Shouresh prepared a Full Upper Arch for me.
I have to say I have been extremely stressed about this appointment given my fear of dentists (very wierd given I work in one) However being a classic British case my experience with Dentistry has been far from positive in the past.
Today - I can put all these fears aside !!! I have had two crowns done by Frank in the past and was amazed at the care and lack of pain, but found it difficult to believe a Full Upper Arch would be as painless.
Shouresh and his team (Karolina and Stephanie) have lived with my constant dirty looks in the appointments leading up to this one. When I can't say what I want it shows all over my face !! They did this with patience and humour and lots of explanations of procedures. This led up to my appointment today.
I am proud to say I did not take any Ativan - advised by Shouresh and made it through the whole procedure with no pain, palpitations or Dirty looks to the team !! I did at one point nearly bite off Shouresh's finger, however I do not do well with impressions...
My teeth look fantastic, I feel great, my experience was nothing but positive. I cried at the end of the appointment as I was so happy - for those who know me well I do not cry often (or hardly ever !!) I am so glad to have Shouresh look after my case and am very happy not only to be a patient at Sierra Centre but an employee also.....Everyone at the Centre this evening complimented my new "Look" and made me glad to be part of that team.......
Thank you, Thank you Shouresh, Karolina and Stephanie. You are truly a dedicated team who work so well together !!

After six months of work with Shouresh I had my final inserts today. What a fantastic job, I can't believe the difference a new smile makes. Shouresh and his team have taught me to relax in the chair and trust my Doctor (this is a huge achievement - never mind the dental work) I have a beautifull smile which I give Shouresh complete credit for. He had a vision and it all came together today. I am blessed to have such a fantastic team work on my mouth and an evironment like Sierra to allow them to achieve wonderful results every time. We truly have excellence in this office everywhere we look. Shouresh - go have a beer tonight and enjoy your tasting menu (which you talked about for the entire appointment - I am starving !!!)

As a teenager my experiences in a dentist’s chair were completely miserable and therefore I had developed a huge phobia about going to see a dentist. When I realized I had a few cavities that needed to be filled I was extremely nervous.
To my surprise my visit to see Dr. Giesbrecht was very positive; I have never met a dentist filled with so much compassion for his patients. I believe that Dr. G actually understands his patients’ fear of the pain and he does an unbelievable job of completely eliminating it. Dr. G not only did a fantastic job on my teeth, but he was able to completely calm my nerves. He even went to the extent to personally call me at home and check up on how I was doing. That is a dentist that truly cares about his patients!
My visit to see Dr. G made me realize how important it is to have a dentist with his skill and knowledge but also his support and kindness. I would like to thank Dr. G and his staff at Sierra Centre for Dental Wellness for such an encouraging experience.
I would highly recommend Dr. Giesbrecht and his staff to anyone!
Thank you again,

I have been going to see Dr. Knebel since 1982. He and his staff are very nice and always willing to listen to your concerns. There is always someone there in case of an emergency. If you have an emergency, the dentist phone you the next day to make sure you are alright. I have never been scared to go to the dentist and his staff make you feel comfortable.

 Dear Dr. Knebel,
I write this letter as a thank you, to you and your staff and as a testimonial for the high regard I have for the knowledge, skills and capabilities you possess as a dental practitioner specializing in Restorative Dentistry.
For many years I had been plagued with excessive wear on my teeth due to bite misalignment and night grinding. This had caused me to fracture a number of molars and the wear on my front teeth had reached a stage where the damage was visibly apparent. I was embarrassed to show my teeth when I smiled. Much more than just the cosmetic, I also suffered from constant, painful headaches/migraines from the excessive clenching.
I had sought treatment options from a variety of specialists in Calgary who had proposed bite alignment and a restorative plan for my teeth. After many consultations, I felt that with your broad base of experience and the confidence you had shown, that the treatment plan you proposed would give me the best chance of alleviating my issues and restoring my smile.
Since undergoing the full reconstruction of my dental work, I must say the change has been amazing. My teeth have been restored to a very natural looking state where I am proud to show off my teeth now and receive many compliments now on my smile. I feel very comfortable with the alignment, no longer feel a need to gnash or grind my teeth and most importantly: my long standing headaches have gone away as has my penchant for pain relievers.
In closing, I would like to state that I am extremely pleased with my results. I would highly recommend you to anyone who is looking for relief from the perils of night grinding and seeking to have their dental work restored. The change has been amazing and I can’t thank you enough!
Best Regards,
Kevin

 Dear Dr. Murray Knebel,
The Junior League of Calgary (JLC) would like to express our gratitude for your generous donation of dental floss and toothbrushes for our Teen Christmas Totes. Your donation and support, along with the support of others in the community, has enabled us to provide a tote full of gifts for 300 teenagers in Calgary.
The 300 tales were distributed through the Together for Christmas initiative put on by nine of the fifteen Community Resource Centers in Calgary. Together for Christmas took place over two Saturdays, December 6th and December 13th at the Calgary Dream Centre. Attendees were served a complete holiday dinner and then enjoyed music, arts and crafts, and the children and teens received their gifts.
Again, thank you for helping us to make a difference in the community by enabling us to provide gifts to teenagers in need during this holiday season.
Susan,
President of the Junior League of Calgary

Dear Dr. Knebel & Staff,
Thank you for your sponsorship for the 2009 Mrs. Calgary Pageant. It was a fine event held at the Kensington Riverside Inn on June 28th. It was well attended and the Calgary Sun also covered the event.
Although I did not win the contest, it was a wonderful personal development experience in confidence that I will use throughout my life. As a contestant for the Mrs. Calgary Pageant, comes business opportunities and challenges that I would never otherwise think of. A new door has been opened and I am looking forward to seeing what is inside. The Sierra centre helped make this possible for me and I am very appreciative.
Yours truly,
Wendy
