Crowns /Bridges/Root Canals

Crowns

A Dental Crown is a custom engineered tooth that “caps” or fits over your existing tooth structure for additional strength and/or esthetic beauty. The benefit of dental crowns is their ability to protect against natural erosion and decay and help repair teeth that have been damaged. Crowns are also used in cosmetic dentistry. An established cosmetic dentist can manipulate the shape, color and size of your natural tooth and design your crowns to suit your facial balance, bone structure, cheek bones and even skin tone. At Sierra, Dr Knebel chooses ceramic products with no metal substructure to produce your crowns. This will ensure that no grey lines or metal will show when you smile. The ceramic products are also the most bio compatible creating better tissue health and less chance of metal allergy. He finds these materials to be strong, durable and esthetically pleasing.

To ensure the most natural looking product your cosmetic dentist will custom create your crowns taking into account the following variables:

* NATURALNESS: Your crown will be made out of the most natural, bio-compatible products available. A cheaper option is to use a nickel alloy substructure in your crown. Although this option may be cheaper many people have allergies to nickel just as children do with cheap nickel ear rings. The nickel causes the traditional “grey crown” look and as well as puffy gum tissue that is inflamed and never seems to heal. When metal is required, we choose a mixture of platinum and gold.

* COLOR: At Sierra we recommend that guests do not choose crowns with a metal sub structure, even if the metal of choice is gold or platinum which is more bio-compatible. If so, you will still be at risk for the traditional “grey crown” stereotype. This discoloration can be seen at the gum line and turns many people off of crowns. At Sierra we use all ceramic crowns or those made of 100% biocompatible precious metals. If esthetics is a concern, the ceramic crowns are natural looking, durable and well-liked by Sierra patients. Our on-site lab can create them in a number of custom tooth shades that will match your natural teeth.

* TRANSLUCENCY: The color and stain of your crown will be built and hand layered from the inside out for depth and naturalness. This process may seem meticulous but the alternative is a surface stained restoration that fades easily leaving the tooth looking dull and fake.

Dental Bridge

A Dental Bridge is a custom made appliance that replaces a missing tooth or teeth. It allows you to speak and chew more easily and can give you a more confident and beautiful smile. A dental bridge is made with two crowns placed on either side of the missing tooth or teeth. The two crowns on either side of the gap serve as anchors and connect to the replacement tooth or teeth in the middle holding it in place. A newer, permanent option is to replace the missing teeth with implants. Implants are often used for patients who want lasting stability, ease of flossing and the most natural option for tooth replacement. Dental bridges are great as a cosmetic or restorative procedure and are typically covered by insurers. One of our insurance specialists can help you understand your plan and get you an estimate of coverage before beginning any work.
Root Canal

A root canal is a simple procedure that can be done in one visit that will let you keep your natural tooth as opposed to having it extracted. After your procedure is completed you will usually need a dental crown to provide strength and stability to the newly root canalled tooth. Root canals are procedures done with a very high success rate. The doctors are able to remove diseased tissue from inside your root without removing the entire tooth. The most common symptoms that will let you know you may need a root canal is a tooth ache or extreme sensitivity to hot and cold. The alternative to a root canal is pulling the tooth. Unless a bridge or implant is placed in the missing site, other teeth will shift creating stresses on the other teeth as well as the jaw joint (TMJ).
